Oppy: the barrier-free kitchen

Disability in the kitchen: the opportunity to express oneself with Oppy

The kitchen is a place for creativity, sharing and self-expression. However, for many people with physical limitations, it can be an inaccessible challenge. The lack of appropriate adaptations and supports can limit the participation and autonomy of people with different types of disability. It is therefore extremely difficult for those of us with special needs to take on the role of chef without a more inclusive redesign of spaces and equipment.

Overcoming disability in the kitchen

Disabled people face a number of additional problems when working in the kitchen. They find it difficult to reach and handle utensils and ingredients when they are high up or in tight spaces. It is more difficult for them to adjust the temperature of appliances such as the oven or hob, and to use work surfaces safely and effectively. Confined spaces and lack of manoeuvrability make it difficult for people with mobility impairments to move around the kitchen and access appliances and cupboards. These difficulties can limit their ability to fully participate in meal preparation and express their creativity as chefs.

Designing the kitchen with disability in mind

Designing a kitchen for people with disabilities requires careful planning and a sensitive approach to the individual needs of users. With the right attention to detail and appropriate adaptations, it is possible to create a working environment that is accessible, safe and functional for everyone.
There must be sufficient space to facilitate movement and it is preferable to create a central point in the room around which people can move easily.
Motor or physical limitations that may result from the use of a wheelchair can be addressed by redefining heights and providing easy opening systems for furniture and equipment. Height-adjustable worktops can make the kitchen more accessible and allow people to work comfortably while seated.
Cabinets and drawers should have ergonomic handles, push-pull systems and pull-out baskets for easy opening and closing. The hob should be induction so that pots and pans can be dragged across it.
Technology can also play a key role, allowing easy control of overhead appliances such as the extractor hood via apps or remote controls.

Oppy: the kitchen within everyone’s reach

Through a combination of inclusive design, innovative technology and customisation, Desco offers a new opportunity for people with disabilities. Oppy is the monobloc kitchen designed to be accessible to everyone. It is the result of research into making the workplace more efficient and ergonomic. The structure is height-adjustable and has been designed so that the cook can easily reach and arrange all the equipment.
The AISI 304 sheet metal base can be adapted to any support, including the plinth. The lower part follows the profile of the wheelchair.
The spacing between the components has been carefully calibrated and the knobs are placed in an easy position for people with disabilities. In addition, the induction hob is optimised for the pan housing and heat transfer is localised. A temperature limiter ensures safety.
The Oppy monobloc kitchen is customisable in size, modular with gas or electric equipment and available in a wide range of finishes.
